(February 27th, 2010 - Toronto ON) Pointe Claire is a sleepy community on that part of the island of Montreal known as the West Island. In reality, the West Island, to those who are unfamiliar with it, is a vast part that stretches from Lachine all the way west. The West Island is frequently referred to as the birthplace of Amanda Brugel but while that is true, the time she spent there was not long. Brugel was raised in Courtice located just outside of Oshawa. Initial plans were to be the best performer in the world, however, she was able to outgrow her dance partners. In an article in The Toronto Star she admitted In heels, I'm 6 feet one inch. Once I had outgrown my males in my group, I decided to quit. In the case of Brugel it was her encouragement from the drama instructor at her high school, which prompted her to take up acting. The teacher was the one who recommended her to audition in the role of Anne in the school's annual production. The teacher who suggested she go after a role in the school's annual production. The show led her to receive a Fine Arts Talent Scholarship at York University where she attended the Theater Program and earned the Bachelor in Fine Arts degree in the year 2000. Since then, Brugel has been involved in more than 60 productions, both with big screen and smaller ones. She gained the most fame when she was offered the character of Rita in the award-winning television show The Handmaid's Tale.
